Practically a national treasure himself, the work of Alan Bennett is as familiar as a hot cup of cocoa on a chilly autumn evening. His very successful career as an actor, author and playwright spans over sixty years and his writing is almost always full of charm, wit and pathos accompanied by a healthy sprinkle of British humour.
The three Talking Heads monologues we have chosen to perform are full of precisely that! Originally commissioned as plays for the BBC in the 1990s, these memorable stories adapt easily to the stage. Directed by Ron Perry, in Her Big Chance, Gina Hodsman plays aspiring actress, Lesley who is thrilled to be cast in a new role, but perhaps not all is what is seems… Ali Silver plays Susan, the disenchanted, alcoholic wife of the local vicar in Bed Among the Lentils, and in A Lady of Letters, Sarah Newman plays Miss Ruddock, a compulsive letter writer trying to remedy the social ills surrounding her. Each female character has a gripping tale to tell and each contains a surprising twist. Interspersed with wonderful readings from Alan Bennett’s Diaries, this promises to be an entertaining evening! Do join us!
We would love you to join our audience in this, our 65th year. It will be even better than staying in with a cup of cocoa!
